General information on Spinal Trauma

Spinal Trauma is usually caused by sudden impact or injury such as falling or jumping from a large height, being hit by a car or other serious impact.
Injuries to the spine include ruptured disk, vertebrae fracture or blood clot. Bleeding within the spinal cord can worsen the injury.


Symptoms of Spinal Trauma

Symptoms of spinal trauma include abnormal appearing spine and curvature, severe pain, walking abnormally and lameness.

Treatments for Spinal Trauma

Similar to human back injury, dogs with suspected spinal injury should me immediately immobilized and kept stationary on a solid board or stretcher to stop any movement that could cause even more damage to the spinal cord.
Depending on the severity of the spine injury, medical or surgical treatment may be needed. If the trauma it too severe euthanasia my be the only option.
