I adopted the best dog in the world last month from Animal Control. I knew she was heartworm positive but my vet started her work-up for treatment and found that she was too far along to be treated right now. The worms have enlarged her heart and are in her lungs. She is on steroids for two weeks and then will be rechecked. If her breathing/weight/general condition have improved, she will go through the risky treatment. If not, she will have to be put to sleep. This is heartbreaking! Please say a little prayer for my doggle and give your pets heartworm preventative! Thanks.

I have a 10yr. old pittbull that has heartwarms we were told that he would not recover. His belly is very swollen his sine legs are swollen and he is having troble breathing. We have taken him to the vet and the frist thing they say is we should have him put to sleep. We then suggested that if we do'nt want him put to sleep what can we do to help him at first she said that he wiil just suffer and die. So then we ask her if there was a medician that they can give him that might help, she siad it would cost you about $100.00 so we said ok she said and even after all the treatment he my not recover compleatly so we are giving him the meds. that she discribed which is waterpill, a meds to kill the heartworms and a heart pill.He just started the meds. yesterday we see a change today but ofcorse it's still to early to see if it's going to work.

Awhile back My mom ,brother, and I wanted a dog. One day, a special ED student that I knew got a terrier puppy that complimented the family on. When we asked them where they got it, they told us of an appartment room number, and we were off! On the way we thought hard about what dad would say, truth is he didn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t want one because of the responcibility, and price. Anyway we got there and asked about the dogs. they let us in greatfully and I, to this day, don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t believe what I saw! There was a new litter of pups in a basket, and when i looked outside near the screen door I saw dozend of dogs, some old, mediam, and Newer! That is when our eyes met. A puppy about 3 months old stared quietly upon us as if he had seen others and given up hope.I told mom excitedly about him and we rushed him out an into the car. We just about drove off when I noticed a noodle shape on his behind! Isaid I saw it moving too! Well anyways we got him medicine, everything worked out fine and he grew on all of us.Now I look back and say my dad was right about expences. I now wish those people hadn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t had so many dogs to put to sleep, but if you don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t pay the price for a life of greatness. He is fine now. OH NO!!!! Leg and foot pains for him now! If you would like to know more, or you want to ask advice or hear another story, ask up i\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m all ears! My e-mail address is: tlcoffer@yahoo.com I would love to share with you!

My husband rescued a little longhair dachshund from the dump back in Jan. while hunting..Jack is a beautiful dog..The vet said he wasnt even a year old. We had him checked out & discovered he had heartworms. We made the decision to let our vet treat Jack. It was a long process but we are happy to say Jack is now free of heartworms. We are faithful in giving our other dog his Heartguard once a month & have never had any problem. I highly recommend Heartguard for your dog..Jack is now a Heartguard taker. He is a bundle of fun..

I have two Golden Retrievers, one a year old and the other 6 months. I have had them on Sentinel for heartworm prevention, and I've been religious about giving them Sentinel the first of every month year round. On my recent annual visit to the vet for my year-old, my vet discovered she has heartworms. My vet has been involved in a study with Sentinel and has been aware of "breakthrough" cases of heartworms with dogs who are regularly administered Sentinel. He mentioned last year that he had seen a few cases, and when I expressed my doubt that I wanted my dog on Sentinel, he told me that it was the best product available to me. I am devastated that my dog has to go through heartworm treatment. I am insisting that Sentinel be held responsible for the expenses, and he was doubtful that I would get more than a free year of Sentinel Flavor Tabs! I am also upset to find out that the "few cases" my vet told me about is more accurately described as several cases, and he has been in discussion with Novartis about the failures of their Sentinel product. Now I face the same thing with my 6-month old puppy, who we can't test until next month. I may have to change veterinarians, but I will definitely change heartworm preventative.
