Spondylosis - dog health experiences

Spondylosis dog experience

I have an English Setter almost 17! She was inconclusively diagnosed with spondylosis or possibly some spinal constriction 3 or 4 years ago, when her activity level dropped suddenly. We tried various pain remedies, including Adequan, with variable success. Within the last year, her symptoms started looking like Cauda Equina...inability to discern position of her rear legs, rear toes curling over, weakness. My local vet did not have her full history, and was adamant that prednisone would NOT help, but I acquired some and have successfully had her on a low dose (2-3 mg daily) for 8 months. Prior to the low dose, I had her on a higher dose and started a slow taper; she was doing cartwheels practically (after she turned 16). I truly believe this low dose, despite vets saying it is inadequate...is helping her. My father had polymyalgia rheumatica, and a 180 lb human weans from prednisone at this same low dose, so I believe this 2-3 mg roughly, is clearly effective.

Our 9 year old min pin has been diagnosed with spondylosis after being x-rayed. He is not getting any pain meds, just an occassional Rimadyl on bad days. We have resorted to Glucosamine and Chondrotin daily supplements, which has helped. We decide to refrain from using any pain meds and reduced the amount of anti-inflamatories due to their side effects. If symptoms worsen then we will review the choice to administer these drugs.

We have a 7 year old Labrador diagnosed with Spondylosis when he was 6. He has had muscle atrophy along his spine so we are now treating with prednisone and are seeing a big difference. Once done with this his treatment may be Rimadyl or Adequin. Anyone else with experience here?

Our Gordon Setter, not quite 8, was just diagnosed with Spondylosis - Vet thought it was torn rear ACL and hip dysplasia but after "Eddie" could not get comfortable (either had to lay or stand, could not sit) he did x-rays which gave us this diagnosis. Bone is pushing on a nerve in lumbar area. We have started a tapering dose of Prednisone and after 2 1/2 days the difference is amazing. Now whether or not he will have to stay on a low dose of this is unknown right now - it is just good to see him comfortable again.
